Gum Disease Treatment in Trumbull, Connecticut

The condition occurs when bacteria and plaque irritate the gums and cause them to appear darkened and swollen. A person suffering from periodontitis may also notice that their gums bleed when they brush or floss. At first, the condition may seem minor, but if it is left untreated, it can cause problems such as jawbone deterioration and tooth loss. For that reason, the condition should be treated as soon as it is detected.

At Trumbull Premier Dental, we offer a full lineup of periodontal services that are designed to put a stop to gum disease and reverse any damage that has occurred. The earlier that the patient gets started, the easier it will be to restore the health of their gums and the look of their smile. We offer the following periodontal services for the treatment of gum disease:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling and root planing uses specialized dental tools to reach below the gum line and remove any harmful bacteria and plaque that is present. Once the area is clean, our experts smooth out the root surfaces to prevent future buildups.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening: One possible side effect of periodontitis is that the gums will become swollen. This can create a “gummy” smile that appears unattractive. A dental crown lengthening procedure will remove any excess gum tissue that is present and restore the appearance of the patient’s smile.
  • Gingivectomy: When scaling and root planing cannot adequately clean the area below the gum line, a gingivectomy may be performed. This surgical procedure involves cutting back the gum line to reach any deep bacteria, tartar and plaque that is present. The loose and diseased gum tissue will then be cut away, and healing should follow.
  • Root Surface Debridement: A root surface debridement procedure thoroughly cleans the root surfaces to remove any unwanted accumulations of harmful materials. This will stop the gum disease from spreading, and encourage healing.
  • Pocket Reduction: A problem that often occurs with gum disease is the development of periodontal pockets. These are voids between the teeth and gums that can become infested with tartar, bacteria and plaque. Once the pockets have formed, the condition can very easily spread throughout the mouth and into the jawbone. Pocket reduction procedures work to eliminate these pockets and promote healing overall.
  • Ridge Preservation: When gum disease reaches advanced stages, it can spread to the connective tissues of teeth and cause them to fall out. Ridge preservation procedures are designed to keep the empty socket properly maintained until a dental implant can be installed. This will prevent any decay or jawbone deterioration from occurring.
  • Sinus Lift: If tooth loss occurs in the upper portion of the mouth, it may be necessary to install dental implants in the upper jawbone. But in some cases, the sinuses may be blocking the area. A sinus lift surgery will move the sinuses out of the way so that implants can be installed.
  • Bone Grafting: When gum disease spreads to the jawbone, it can cause the structure to deteriorate. Bone grafting procedures use artificial bone material and special proteins to strengthen and regenerate the structure. This can help restore the overall structure of the patient’s face and allow dental implants to be properly installed.
